KHAMIR
is a joint initiative of Kachchh Nav Nirrnan Abhiyan, Nehru
Foundation for Development and the Confederation of Indian
Industry. Its facility is supported by the Government of
Gujarat. KHAMIR has been set up as an education, training,
demonstration and Interpretation facility in the areas of
craft, environment and heritage conservation in Kachchh.
KHAMIR in Kachchhi means "intrinsic pride", a trait associated
with people of Kachchh, who live with great resilience in
spite of the adversities of a harsh, arid environment struck
repeatedly by natural disaster. The KHAMIR - Craft Resource
Centre's mission is to revitalize and reposition the crafts
Kachchh by addressing the inherent technological, ecological,
socio-economic, and cultural issues confronting artisans.
The Craft Resource Centre works to enable artisans to develop
a strong market and business orientation, to source relevant
resources for rejuvenating their craft sector and to forge
creative partnerships within the artisan community as well
as with global community. The KHAMIR - Craft Resource Centre
looks beyond the embroideries for which Kachchh is known.
It works intensively with the regional crafts of block printing,
tie-dye, weaving, lacquer, bell-making, pottery, silver,
leather, namda and roagan. KHAMIR's craft facility is located
10 km from Bhuj. It provides a common roof for design, trade
facilitation, access to raw materials, fabrication, bench
marking quality, credit, branding, and archival services-
KHAMIR - Craft Resource Centre envisages stake holding by
artisans, key craft institutions, and individuals with expertise
and commitment to Kachchh craft.
