Vikram
A Sarabhai Community Science Centre (VASCSC)
is a pioneering community science centre which aims to nurture
young minds and direct them towards scientific thinking
with methods and techniques which make the process of enquiry
and learning a fun filled, enjoyable and lasting experience.
The core of the Centre's philosophy is to take school and
college students, beyond the rigid framework of textbooks
and encourage them to think, explore and create.
It was way back in 1966 that India's
renowned scientists Dr. Vikram Sarabhai founded the Centre
that would encourage scientific thinking and innovative
teaching. The Centre has to its credit a number of firsts;
it being the first to have an interactive exhibition space,
open laboratories, mathematics laboratory, science playground,
and also the first to actively use computers in science
education and develop interactive (animated) educational
programmes.
In the early years, the Centre received
not only Dr. Sarabhai’s guidance in the formulation
of its vision and goals, but also benefited from his personal
involvement in the execution of many of its programs. After
Dr. Sarabhai’s untimely death in 1971, the Centre
was renamed as the Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science
Centre in his honour, by the then Prime Minister of India,
Smt. Indira Gandhi.
